Case Study

Church Sanctuary FEM Review.

Englishtown, New Jersey | Independent structural peer review for a proposed church sanctuary and roof framing system.

Finite element model for Englishtown church sanctuary structural review

Project Overview

Independent Peer Review for a Complex Sanctuary Framing System.

H&Z Consulting Engineering was retained to perform an independent structural peer review for the proposed church sanctuary and roof framing system in Englishtown, New Jersey. The sanctuary is composed of a steel frame system supporting a uniquely complex architectural layout with irregular geometry and unconventional load paths.

Because of the complexity of the proposed design, H&Z was engaged to evaluate the structural integrity of the framing system and provide third-party validation prior to construction. The review focused on confirming that the proposed system could perform as intended while supporting the architectural ambition of the sanctuary space.

Finite Element Review Scope

To perform the assessment, H&Z utilized finite element modeling to study both global and localized behavior of the steel framing system. This analytical approach allowed the team to review how loads move through the structure and how critical members respond under design loading conditions.

  • Independent review of the proposed sanctuary and roof framing system.
  • Finite element modeling of the steel frame system.
  • Evaluation of irregular geometry and unconventional load paths.
  • Verification of load distribution and global system behavior.
  • Review of localized member performance at critical framing areas.
  • Assessment for code compliance and best engineering practice alignment.

Structural Quality Assurance

The peer review provided an added layer of quality assurance before construction. H&Z evaluated the proposed framing for structural adequacy, reviewed critical load path behavior and helped confirm the performance of key framing elements supporting the sanctuary and roof.

For architecturally ambitious projects, this type of third-party review helps owners, architects and contractors move forward with greater confidence in the structural system, especially when the design includes complex geometry or atypical framing behavior.

Engineering Result

The Englishtown project highlights H&Z's ability to support complex institutional work through technical analysis, independent peer review and clear engineering judgment. The site is currently under construction, and H&Z looks forward to sharing updates as the project progresses.
